LIKOMA ISLANDS
Likoma Islands include Likoma and Chizumulu in Lake Malawi. These Islands are enclaves of Malawi found in the territorial waters of Mozambique. Together, Likoma and Chizumulu form Likoma District, which is the smallest district of the 28 Districts in Malawi. The district covers an area of 18 km² and has a population of around 20,000 inhabitants, with seasonal fluctuations in relation to fishing seasons.
Likoma prides itself on its unique and preserved beauty, clean environment, good views, friendly people and unique culture. It is acclaimed as one of the places in Africa with best beaches, as rated by About Africa Travel, ‘Top Ten Best Beaches in Africa’. These beaches are un-spoilt, with medium-sized sand, and clear-clean waters. The vegetation has been preserved as grassland with few wild animals; mostly reptiles, birds, and others. The waters offer some of the greatest swimming, diving, water sportsand fishing experiences. It is also known for its beautiful fish, including colorful cichlids.
The Islands have a unique culture which has promoted co-existence amongst different groups of people. The people of Likoma are also known through their unique dances; both day and night, and they take pride in dancing up to this day. Most of the people rely on fishing, with a few working and doing businesses.
